Description

The city of Olbia was founded in the 7th century BC as a Greek colony. The name Olbia means “happy” or “rich” in Greek. During the 5th and 4th centuries BC bronze coins in the form of a dolphin were minted in the city at the Black Sea.

In ancient Greece dolphins were highly esteemed and accompanied the gods Poseidon, Apollo and Demeter.
