Emperor Justinianus I (*482 †565), born as Flavius Petrus Sabbatius Justinianus, was emperor of the Byzantine Empire. He assumed the reign of the Eastern Roman Empire from his uncle, Emperor Justin I.

Byzantium regarded itself as the legitimate successor of the Roman Empire. The reason being, following the split of Rome into east and west in the year 395, the court of the Western Roman Emperor was abolished by Justinianus in the year 554.

The Eastern Roman Empire still existed, however, into the year 1543. Emperor Justinianus was one of the most significant rulers of late antiquity. On 23rd February in the year 532, the construction of the impressive basilica Hagia Sophia was initiated on the orders of Emperor Justinianus I, and it was inaugurated on 26th December 537.

The gold coin was minted in Constantinople. It depicts Justinianus on the obverse and a standing angle with cross and globus on the reverse. The bronze coin also shows the portrait of Justinianus on the obverse and a large “M” (M=40 Nummi – 1 Follis) on the reverse. The almost 1500-year-old coins are encapsulated and presented in an elegant real wooden box with a certificate.
