The construction of initial sections of the wall can be traced back to as early as 220 B.C., a period that saw the commencement of the Qin Dynasty, a unified China under rulership by Qin Shi Huang. Prior to his rise to power, fortifications had been erected around Chinese cities to separate different districts in the Country. Once the Chinese Emperor came to rule, he ordered a large group of soldiers and convicts to construct a wall on the northern border. Whilst many believed the project to be an impossibility, plans went forward which ultimately led to the death of over 400,000 people with many buried within the wall itself.
